Edmund Sears, pasteur du Massachusetts, écrivit le poème en 1849, et la mélodie de Richard Storrs Willis (1850) lui donna ce balancement à 6/8 que les Américains chantent encore. La version facile passe en do majeur avec une note de basse par mesure. La version intermédiaire conserve l'harmonisation à quatre voix de Willis en si bémol majeur.
