A chord inversion rearranges the notes so a different note is at the bottom. Root position has the root note at the bottom. 1st inversion moves the root up an octave. 2nd inversion moves the first two notes up. Inversions create smoother transitions between chords and are essential for advanced piano playing.

A chord formula describes the intervals between the root note and each other note in the chord. For example, a Major chord has the formula Root - 3 - 5, meaning it uses the root, major 3rd, and perfect 5th intervals. Understanding formulas helps you build any chord from any root note.

Technical Details
How the piano chord finder engine works
Chord Engine
Chords are calculated using interval-based formulas from the root note. Each chord type has a defined set of semitone intervals (e.g., Major = 0, 4, 7). Inversions are computed by rotating the note order and adjusting octaves.
Audio Playback
Sound is generated using Tone.js through the Web Audio API. Chords can be played simultaneously (block chord) or as arpeggiated sequences. All audio synthesis runs locally in the browser with no server dependencies.
