How It Works
Convert YouTube audio to MIDI in four simple steps
1. Get Audio from YouTube
Extract the audio track from your YouTube video using a download tool. Save it as MP3, WAV, or any supported format.
2. Upload the Audio File
Drag and drop or click to upload. Supports MP3, MP4, WAV, M4A, FLAC, AAC, and AIFF files.
3. AI Conversion
Click "Convert to MIDI" and let the AI model analyze the audio. The neural network detects notes, timing, and velocity.
4. Download MIDI
Your MIDI file is ready. Download it and use it in any DAW, notation software, or play it online.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes! Extract the audio from the YouTube video first (as MP3, WAV, or another supported format), then upload it to our converter. The AI will transcribe the music into an accurate MIDI file that you can download instantly.
-
The legality depends on the content and your intended use. Converting audio you own or have permission to use is generally fine. For copyrighted music, fair use may apply for personal study or education purposes. Always respect copyright and the rights of content creators.
-
There are several methods to extract audio from YouTube:
- Use a browser extension designed for audio downloads
- Use an online audio extraction service
- Use desktop software like yt-dlp for personal use
- Record the audio output directly using screen recording tools
-
For best MIDI conversion results, extract audio in WAV or FLAC (lossless) format when possible. If only compressed formats are available, MP3 at 320kbps or M4A/AAC at 256kbps will give good results. Avoid low-bitrate files (below 128kbps) as the compression artifacts can affect note detection accuracy.
-
No. This tool does not access, download, or connect to YouTube in any way. It converts audio files that you upload from your device. You need to extract and save the audio separately before using our converter.
-
Yes, our converter is completely free to use! There are no hidden fees, subscriptions, or usage limits. Convert as many audio files as you need without any cost. No account or sign-up required.
-
Accuracy depends on the source material. Solo piano and single-instrument recordings produce highly accurate MIDI with correct notes, timing, and velocity. Complex arrangements with multiple instruments will be simplified into a single-track MIDI. YouTube's audio compression can slightly reduce accuracy compared to lossless sources.
-
Absolutely! Piano tutorials are one of the best use cases for this tool. The AI model (Magenta Onsets and Frames) is specifically trained on piano music, so piano tutorial videos produce excellent MIDI transcriptions with accurate note detection.
-
MIDI files are incredibly versatile:
- Open in a DAW (GarageBand, FL Studio, Ableton, Logic Pro) to edit notes
- View as sheet music using notation software or our MIDI to Sheet Music tool
- Change instruments, tempo, or key without affecting audio quality
- Use as a learning tool to study the notes and structure of a song
- Play back with any virtual instrument or sound font
-
Yes, completely safe. All audio processing happens locally in your browser using TensorFlow.js. Your audio files are never uploaded to any server, never stored, and never analyzed by us. The conversion runs entirely on your device.
-
Yes, but the results work best with instrumental music. When vocals are present, the AI may interpret the vocal melody as instrumental notes. For the most accurate results, try to find an instrumental version or a karaoke version of the song on YouTube.
-
Yes! The converter works on any device with a modern browser — desktop, tablet, or phone. However, the AI conversion is computationally intensive, so desktop or laptop browsers will provide faster processing times and a smoother experience.
-
Conversion time depends on the length of the audio file and your device's processing power. A typical 3-4 minute song takes 30-90 seconds on a modern desktop. Mobile devices may take longer. The progress bar shows real-time status during conversion.
-
Yes! You can convert as many files as you want, one at a time. After each conversion, download your MIDI file, then upload the next audio file. There are no daily limits or usage caps.
-
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a file format that stores musical notes, timing, velocity, and other performance data — but not actual audio. MIDI files are small, editable, and can be played with any instrument sound. Musicians use them for learning songs, arranging music, creating covers, and producing new compositions.
Technical Details
How the AI YouTube-to-MIDI transcription engine works
AI Model
The converter uses Google Magenta's Onsets and Frames model, a convolutional and recurrent neural network trained on the MAESTRO dataset (over 200 hours of virtuosic piano performances with aligned MIDI). The model separately predicts note onsets and active frames, then combines them for accurate pitch and timing detection.
Processing Pipeline
Audio is decoded using the Web Audio API, resampled to 16kHz mono, and converted to a mel spectrogram. The spectrogram feeds into the neural network running via TensorFlow.js in your browser. Audio extracted from YouTube (typically MP3 at 128-256kbps) is decoded and processed identically to any other audio source. Output note predictions are quantized and written as a standard MIDI file.
Supported Formats
Best Results for YouTube Audio
- Solo piano or single-instrument YouTube videos produce the most accurate MIDI
- Extract audio in WAV or FLAC when possible — lossless formats give better results
- YouTube's audio compression adds artifacts; higher quality sources convert better
- Videos with minimal background noise and clear audio convert best
- Multi-instrument arrangements produce a simplified single-track MIDI
