How to Make a Beat on the Drum Machine
From an empty grid to a loop of your own in three moves.
- Start from a groove. Pick a pattern slot, press Play and listen to the starter groove go round.
- Edit the steps. Tap steps to add or remove hits, accent the ones that should land harder, or clear the pattern and start over.
- Set the feel. Change the tempo, add swing, switch kits, and play the pads on top while the loop runs.

How the sounds are made
This digital drum machine has two kinds of kit. Acoustic plays recordings of real drums, each recorded on its own for the free VCSL sample library, with up to two takes and three hit strengths per sound, under 200 KB in all. Analog, Punchy and Lo-fi contain no recordings: the Web Audio API generates each hit as it plays from oscillators, noise and filters, and the kit sets its length, brightness and grit.

Yes. Every sound, kit, slot and control is free, with no account, trial or time limit. Ads elsewhere on the page pay for it; none play inside the drum machine.
What is a drum machine?
An electronic instrument that plays drum sounds from a programmed pattern. Here you place hits on a grid of steps in your browser and it loops them in time.
How do I make a beat with the step sequencer?
Pick a slot, press Play and tap steps: a kick on 1, 5, 9 and 13 gives a four-on-the-floor pulse. Add a snare or clap on 5 and 13, then hi-hats, tempo and swing.
Which sounds and kits does it have?
Kick, snare, clap, closed and open hi-hat, low and high tom, and cowbell. Acoustic plays recorded drums, Analog has a long, deep kick, Punchy a short, hard kick and bright snare, Lo-fi a dull, gritty tone.
Does it have 808-style sounds?
The Analog kit is the closest to the 808-style sound of hip-hop and trap, with its long, deep kick. Its sounds are synthesized from oscillators and noise, not sampled from hardware; for real drums, pick the Acoustic kit.
Can I play the drum pads with my computer keyboard?
Yes. A, S, D and F play kick, snare, low tom and high tom; Q, W, E and R play clap, closed hi-hat, open hi-hat and cowbell. Space starts or stops the sequencer.
Can I connect a MIDI controller?
Yes. In a browser with Web MIDI, such as Chrome or Edge, any controller sending General MIDI drum notes plays the pads: 36 is the kick, 38 the snare, 42 the closed hi-hat.
Which starter patterns are included?
Four on the floor, Boom bap, Trap and Breakbeat, one per slot from A to D. Play them as they are, study how each groove is built, or change any step.
Can I save, share or export my beat?
Patterns in slots A to D stay in this browser and return on your next visit on the same device, unless you clear site data. There is no audio or MIDI export, share link or recording.
Do I need an app to use the drum machine on my phone?
No. On a phone you edit one lane at a time, its 16 steps in two rows of eight, and the pads take several fingers at once.
