Mary Had a Little Lamb began as an 1830 poem by Sarah Josepha Hale, and in 1877 it was the first thing Thomas Edison recorded on his phonograph. The beginner arrangement keeps the right hand on three neighbouring keys, E, D and C, with one long bass note per bar in the left hand, so a child can play it after a single lesson.
