'When the Saints' began as a slow spiritual played on the way to the graveyard; the brisk, celebratory version everyone knows is what New Orleans bands played on the way back. Louis Armstrong's 1938 recording fixed it as a jazz standard. The tune uses barely more than a major scale, which makes it one of the first pieces a beginner can play convincingly — and one of the most rewarding to swing once the notes are secure.
